MAKING ART
POSTER

CHALLENGE

I was prompted to create an expressive poster for the OCAD U community, with the catch being that I couldn't use the Adobe Suite for any aspect of my process.

PROCESS

I began my process by drawing mind maps, creating lists, and sketching out possible compositions. From here, I decided to base my poster around the childhood freedom of making art and to keep that alive at OCAD while resisting external pressures. It's a call to action for students to create without self-judgment, as we once did.

My initial iterations were based on collecting my old childhood drawings and distorting them with a scanner. While I loved how expressive and personal this approach was, it felt too personal and not community-oriented. Therefore, I switched to childhood symbols that were more universal.

OUTCOME

I used cookie dough and fridge magnets to create my final composition. The cookie dough represents nurturing oneself, and the fridge magnets represent childhood nostalgia. Combined together, they don't necessarily make sense, but this was intentional—showcasing how non-linear childhood creativity can be.

My final poster was printed in a size of 24 by 36 inches using an inkjet printer. It was then hung in the OCAD hallways for the winter semester of 2023.
